OVERVIEW |
I have been engineering consultant since 1991. I have provided materials selection and processing expertise, structural design and analysis, and expert witness testimony for hundreds of satisfied customers.
My education and experience are in the fields of materials and structural design and analysis with a specialty in composite materials. My experience spans the marketplace from aerospace structures where high performance and low weight are often critical factors to fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) products such as pipe, duct, stacks, and tanks where cost and corrosion resistance are usually most important. |

| Employer:
Engineering Consultant Title: Owner and Principal Engineer Location: Newark, DE Duration: 10/1991 - Present Job Duties: I am an Engineering Consultant (since 1991) involved with structural design and analysis and expert witness testimony with a specialty in laminated and composite materials. With 18 years experience in Advanced Composites and FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics), my background spans the market place for composites applications. I have assisted hundreds of satisfied clients through the years. These projects ranged from structural design and analysis over a wide range of applications, failure analysis, manufacturing processing (such as filament winding, resin transfer molding, hand lay up, and spray up), materials selection, expert witness testimony in product liability cases, and expert witness testimony in patent dispute cases. The
design of aerospace composite structures often requires that the load paths, boundary
conditions, and the magnitudes of the loads be carefully determined. The designer
has the opportunity to select both the fiber and matrix materials as well as the
fiber orientations and thicknesses to meet the design requirements. I have considerable
experience in this area over a broad range of applications for most of the possible
fiber and resin combinations. My computer programs can be used evaluate trade-offs
and to produce an optimal structural design, whether it be cost or performance
driven. |

Composites USA Title: Engineering Manager Location: North East, MD Duration: 03/1992 09/30/2003 Job Duties: Engineering Manager: Composites USA, North East, MD. Accountable for the design and analysis of Fiberglass (FRP) composite structures for the chemical process industry and other structural applications. These products include tanks, pipe, duct, stacks, process vessels, and scrubbers as well as many custom applications. Responsible for specification writing, sales, marketing, and process development for new applications. Programmed cost estimating spreadsheets that were linked to engineering calculations that led to cost competitive proposals which increased the gross sales and profits. Provided engineering calculations that allowed Composites USA to quote on projects that were previously not bid. |

Thiokol Corp. Title: Manager of Advanced Technology Location: Elkton, MD Duration: 06/1985 - 10/1991 Job Duties: Structural Engineering Analyst promoted to Manager of Advanced Technology: Thiokol Corporation, Elkton, MD. Responsible for the output of the Analytical and Composites Groups. The design, analysis, and manufacturing of composite structures were integrated within this Department which included designers, engineering analysts, chemists, process engineers, and technicians. Composites design and manufacturing, thermal, structural, dynamics, and mass properties analyses were provided to support Division and Corporate programs. Managed three Corporate IR&D programs relating to advanced materials and structures that focused on improving performance while reducing costs and lead times. Developed and demonstrated a number of innovative design and manufacturing features to meet specific project requirements on both the Division and Corporate levels. |
SKILLS
AND ABILITIES |
The
basic steps in evaluating a composite material are (1) micro mechanics to predict
elastic properties of an individual ply, (2) analysis of the composite laminate
using laminated plate theory and/or finite element analysis (macro mechanics),
and (3) strength prediction which may require some mechanical testing for verification.
I have numerous computer programs to perform these calculations. |
